The Decatur County Jail is a conventional facility with a modern design. This allows the hundred inmates to have access to standard care. It is located at Breckenridge. This is a temporary home for both male and female detainees. Prisoners from summit county and around it are housed here.
The county jail sports standard medical and dental center. There are also recreational centers. There is a self-sufficient kitchen too. The jail also has direct access to the Decatur County Court. This ensures that dangerous and transports are conducted safely for both prisoners and officers. The Decatur County Sheriff is charged with the responsibility of “Keeper of the Jail”. The jail is the holding place for persons that are arrested in summit county. The Jail has a license to keep arrestees either before or after sentence. Other convicted offenders and contracted Tennessee State Prison prisoners are also kept at Summit county jail.
The priority of the county jail is public safety. This is why they offenders off the streets. But this is not the only mission of the facility. The jail also provides tools and skills to offenders. These skills help with their safe reintegration into the community.
The county Jail offers treatment to substance abuse victims. These treatments include chemical and psychological rehabilitation. It also makes GED/High School classes available to interested candidates.
The summit county jail provides vocational training and anger management classes. They also help prisoners acquire life skills they will need later when they get out.
The inmates can take advantage of the inmate working program. This helps to reduce the financial burden on taxpayers’ funds by reducing the cost of running the facility. The prisoners pay some of their debt to the community by providing work for county projects. They could help clear snow off porches or dirt out of drainages. But perhaps what stands out the most is the fact that prisoners can learn a trade or vocation at their own pace.
No inmate is worked beyond their physical abilities, however. Every inmate’s health is considered before they are given their jobs.
There are seven main housing units in the Decatur County Juvenile Detention Facility. There are also two annex units. This means that the total capacity of the facility is about 100 juveniles and adult inmates too.
This jail houses an offender within the time frame that ranges between one night and several years. The prisoners can use the jail library which is under constant update and supply of books.
Visitation in this county detention center is usually according to the alphabetical order of the last names of the detainees.
People whose last name starts with the letters A-F can be visited on Tuesday starting from 7:30pm to 8:00 pm.
People with names starting at G-L can be visited on Thursday between the very same hours as Tuesday.
M-R: will receive visitors between
1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. and S-Z: can have visitors between the same hours as Saturday.
All visits from inmates will happen on the premises of the Detention facility. All visitors must access the detention center from the main entrance.
No visitor should bring any contraband to the prison premises.
The summit county jail has a program that allows inmates to work, learn or even have time sentences reduced. Some of the works that the inmates could partake in are
- On-site cleaning
- Meal preparation
- Painting, and cleaning vehicles. Some inmates even get to work at the summit county animal shelter.
An inmate can usually bring white T. Shirts and white underwear to the jail. They can also bring prescription medication and some cash for phone calls and commissary. The jail prohibits items such as books and magazines. Hygiene items and long-sleeved shirts are also contrabands.
The security of staff and inmates is assured at the summit county jail. All staff wears their identification at all times. The inmates are protected from themselves and each other.
