The Rhea County Sheriff’s Department is the law enforcement agency responsible for overseeing and maintaining the day to day operation at the Rhea County Jail. Anyone who is arrested within the Rhea County limits will be processed in the Rhea County Jail by the correctional officers there.
Back in 2002, Mike Neal, Sheriff was elected into the office at Rhea County. During this time the Rhea County Jail was licensed to house up to 54 inmates.
In 2009, the Rhea County Jail underwent a major addition to the facility. The addition consisted of two new wings to Rhea County Jail. The Rhea County Jail was now licensed to house up to 87 inmates.
During this time again Mike Neal, Sheriff saw that there needed to be something done about the overcrowding. Neal petitioned for Rhea County to build a whole new facility. However, due to not enough funds, the Rhea County Commission could not authorize the construction of a new facility. But, the county did decide they could add on to the already existing facility.
All correctional officers employed by the Rhea County Jail are certified the State of Tennessee. They are trained for all day to day interactions, the housing of prisoners, and the processing of prisoners.
