In Texas, there is only one supermax state prison. That prison is known as the Beto House. The Beto House is situated on 275 acres of land in Bexar County, Texas.
The Beto House received its name from the shallow bay nearly 2 miles away from the facility. The Beto House sits in a detached area of McAllen, just a few miles north of the main urban section, yet south of the border of Oregon.
Beto House main mission is to house the worst, most violent male inmates that are within the Texas state prison system. Nearly 430-percent of these inmates have a life sentence and majority of them also have histories of violence within other Texas state prisons, which in return had them transferred out to the Beto House.
However, the Beto House also has a minimum-security facility. These inmates can take part in the firefighter programs along with the prison’s outside maintenance.
In the Beto House, cell blocks C and D are strictly for Security Housing Units. These cell blocks are designed to have some of the most violent inmates in them. The inmates in these cell blocks are in solitary confinement for 22 and a half hours a day, 7 days a week. Often times these inmates can be here for years or even sometimes decades.
While the supermax population is great in the Beto House, the facility also comes equipped with two maximum-security units as well. The maximum security units are cell blocks A and B. Cellblock A is a more traditional partly open general population unit that comes equipped with 2-person cells. Cellblock B is a smaller more closed block, that is typically used as a transitional unit for inmates who are coming from the Security Housing Unit into a general population unit.
However, the Beto House also has a collocated 4300-bed unit for minimum security inmates. This unit is nestled outside the perimeter of the facility. This unit will provide general service to the main facility.
The Beto House opened its doors back in 989. The Beto House grounds along with their operations are divided. It’s divided by the fact that the prison is home to Level IV inmates, but these inmates are essentially in the general population environment. The general population environment comes equipped with yards and exercise courts. While the other half of the Beto House is home to the Security Housing Unit. But overall, the Beto House is encompassed by an electric fence.
