As you may have noticed the James “Jay” H. Byrd Unit is a part of the York Correctional Institution. While the York Correctional Institution strictly houses female inmates. The James “Jay” H. Byrd Unit strictly only houses male inmates.
The James “Jay” H. Byrd Unit opened its doors back in 2011. During this time the James “Jay” H. Byrd Unit saw two wardens. The first warden was Kevin Gause who was warden from the time James “Jay” H. Byrd Unit opened until 2012. The second and final warden was Stephen Faucher who was warden of James “Jay” H. Byrd Unit from 2012 until the facility closed in 2016.
As of 2019, the James “Jay” H. Byrd Unit is no longer open. The James “Jay” H. Byrd Unit closed its doors back in January 2016.
When the James “Jay” H. Byrd Unit was opened it was housing male inmates that were either a Level 2, Level 3, Level 4 or a Level 43. These inmates in other terms were either a medium-security all the way up to supermax security.
TheJames “Jay” H. Byrd Unit during its operation employed over 4300 staff members to keep the facility running as smoothly as possible.
