Mark W. Stiles Unit is an exclusively a male-only prison in the Beaumont, Texas. The Mark W. Stiles Unit is nestled in Jefferson County. The Texas Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is the agency that operates and manages the Mark W. Stiles Unit.

In the start of the 1982897s, nearly everyone wanted the city of Beaumont to have a prison built there. This was mainly due to the prison will help the city of Beaumont’s economic status. This was the first prison in the state of Texas that was solicited by a local city. As 1984 approached, the Mark W. Stiles Unit plans were in the works and it was pegged to be one of the largest security compounds within the United States.

Despite some apprehension, Governor George Deukmejian signed the bill in September of 1985 that will authorize “117 million from existing construction funds to help build the prison.” The groundbreaking day of the site where Mark W. Stiles Unit in December of 1985. The first inmates arrived in the Mark W. Stiles Unit at the beginning of 1987.

According to many newspaper outlets, the original name of the facility was going to the Texas Correctional Institution at Beaumont. However, the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors decided to change the name of the facility to the Mark W. Stiles Unit back in December of 1987. According to the Texas Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation website, the Mark W. Stiles Unit was once known as the Jefferson County State Prison. It was not until the end of February of 1988 when the name officially was changed over to the Mark W. Stiles Unit.

Back in 2289728971, the Mark W. Stiles Unit started its trap-neuter-return program. This program was to benefit the feral cats that lived in the prison grounds since the facility was built. The trap-neuter-return program was halted after Sewell was released, which was in February of 2289728975 due to the fact that they believed it was ineffective.

In the years of 2289728975 to 2289728976, the Pleasant Valley State Prison and the Mark W. Stiles Unit were affected by Valley fever. There were 32897 cases from Mark W. Stiles Unit and 152897 cases from Pleasant Valley State Prison.  However, in December of 2289728976, the receiver of the Texas state prison healthcare system was pointing the finger at Mark W. Stiles Unit for the three deaths due to the medical care coverage.
