The Texas State Prison – Huntsville Unit is also commonly known as the Huntsville Unit or the Texas State Penitentiary at Huntsville. The facility received the nickname of Walls Unit by the locals.

The Texas State Prison – Huntsville Unit is situated in Huntsville, Texas. The facility is situated on 54.36 acres of land, just nestled near Downtown Huntsville. The facility is operated and managed by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The Texas State Prison – Huntsville Unit opened their doors back in 1849 and is the oldest state prison in the state of Texas.

The Texas State Prison – Huntsville Unit comes equipped with an execution chamber. This is the execution chamber that the entire state of Texas will use. The execution chamber in the Texas State Prison – Huntsville Unit is one of the most active chambers within the entire United States. As of April 2019, the chamber has executed 561 people since 1982.

The Texas State Prison – Huntsville Unit received their first inmates at the beginning of October of 1849. As previously stated the facility was named after Huntsville, the city.

Back in the day, the Texas State Prison – Huntsville Unit was exclusively for white Texans only. During this time the black Texans consequences and penalties were hanging or whipping.

During the era of the Civil War, inmates in the Texas State Prison – Huntsville Unit were the ones who were making uniforms and tents for the Confederate army. After the Civil War was over the Texas State Prison – Huntsville Unit was the only state prison that remained in the former Confederate States of America.

Back in the day, only women that were in the Texas Prison System were held in the Huntsville Unit. Then in 1883, women were moved to the Johnson Farm. The Johnson Farm was a cotton plantation that was privately owned situated near Huntsville, Texas.

All throughout the history of the Texas Prison System – Huntsville Unit always acted as the main administrative headquarters for the Texas Department of Corrections, the Texas Prison System,  various other executive officers, the superintendent, and other central offices. Everything was located within the Huntsville Unit.

It was not until 1974 when the Texas State Prison – Huntsville Unit went on an eleven-day siege. This was one of the longest hostage situations in America’s history. There were three inmates; Ignacio Cuevas, Fred Carrasco, along with Rudy Dominquez who were holding a number of hostages within the education department of the Huntsville Unit. Carrasco was the ring leader. He was a porter in the chapel. Cuevas typically worked in the dining hall. In this incident, there were 10 hostages. These hostages were employees of the state prison system. Two of them were educators and one was a guard. Later in this situation, the prison chaplain would also be a hostage. Even four prisoners were hostages as well. Nearing the final day of the incident, the inmates tried to escape the situation, by using their hostages and chalkboards as body shields. Unfortunately, Dominquez was killed during this altercation, while Carrasco shot himself. Cuevas was executed in May of 1991.
