Central Utah Youth Center, also known as the Richfield prison, is located in Richfield, Utah. Central Utah Youth Center began processing inmates in 1989 and the facility has expanded since then. Prisoners are housed in separate areas depending on their crimes, their risk assessment, and their behavior.

Central Utah Youth Center has a capacity of 150 inmates, meaning this is the maximum number of beds in this facility. Every year this facility has 3480 bookings and a full-time staff of 43. Central Utah Youth Center alone has death row cell blocks and is the home of Utah’s execution chamber.

Utah’s mission is to promote and prepare the inmate to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never return to prison and thus lower Utah’s recidivism rate.

The inmates housed at the institution are placed according to their custody level which is determined during the intake process. There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released.

State facilities provide basic living standards to meet most of the inmate’s needs, including dietary, health, fitness, education, religious practices, entertainment, and many others.

Some of the inmate programs at this facility are a GED program where inmates can earn their General Education degree, Alcoholic Anonymous and Narcotic Anonymous meetings, religious support including church services and Bible studies and choir, work release programs, and a prison trusty program. Inmates are also able to complete a Vocational program with food service, auto mechanic, and building maintenance degrees.

Inmates are allowed recreation time each day outside of the prison where they can play basketball or exercise.

Inmates are given three meals a day, along with snacks from the commissary. All meals are approved by a dietician.
