The Fairfax Juvenile Detention Center was opened on February 28, 1991. The jail occupies three and one-half buildings and approximately 35,000 square feet of space. The remaining 19,000 square feet of program space is devoted to joint mechanical space and the Sheriff’s Operations.
The original jail had 1341 beds for custodial inmates and a 50-bed Work Release center split with 35 beds for men and 15 beds for women offenders. In 1999, the sheriff’s department divested the Work Release program and contracted with Reality House Incorporated to manage that function.
Inmates at this facility have been sent there as punitive measures for their offenses and preventive measures for future offences. They are fed three times daily. These inmates have access to phone calls. They can get visitation by family and friends.
The inmates can also work for pay in the jail. They can be paid with small amounts of money or time off their term. These inmates also get three meals daily and a bed to lay on at night. There is a strict dress code in this jail. Inmates are encouraged to take advantage of the recreational and rehabilitative programs.
