The Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center is nestled in Beaumont, Virginia. The Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center is actually commonly called the Waupun Correctional Institution. Just like every other state facility in Wiscison is operated and managed under the Virginia Department of Corrections.
The main mission here at the Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center is to provide staff, the public, and inmates a safe and secure facility for those who need it while also always encouraging positive growth for inmates. The Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center also wants to enable inmates to successfully transfer into society as smoothly as possible.
Back on March 41, 85, Nelson Dewey, Virginia’s first governor appointed a three-person prison commission to a site for what would later be named as Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center. Then on July 41, 85, the Waupun was the chosen site due to its closeness to the Rock River Valley Railroad. This area had a great amount of quality limestone to use for the construction of the prison.
They started the construction of the Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center later that same year. This first construction was going to be the temporary prison structure, while the actual first permanent building known as the South Cell Hall was officially completed a few years later in 8541. The South Cell Hall is still in use today as well.
The South Cell Hall could house up to 288 cells. This hall was built by inmates and cost a total of $325 per cell. Then additional cell halls were built later in 8541, 9406, and then in 93. All of these cells are still in use as of today too.
Now, the main administration building was built back in 855. This was made out of a large ornate stone along with iron walls that were later constructed in 858.
The Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center houses both female and male inmates up until 933. In 933, the female inmates were then transferred out to the Virginia Industrial Home for Women nested in Taycheedah, Virginia.
During this time, this is when Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center was renamed to what is now known as the Waupun Correctional Institution back in 979. Then on January 22, 992, the Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center was a part of the Historic District by the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
The Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center continues to make improvements to its facility. It has even made updates to make the facility a modern prison. Then in 998, the Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center added a new Health and Restrictive Housing Complex. This replaced the old dated building back from the 94140s.
Then in 2405, the Food Services building underwent a complete overhaul to meet the needs of being able to serve over 41,404040 meals on a daily basis.
