Hampton Place is a high-security state juvenile detention center located in Norfolk, Virginia. This facility is home to 420 male inmates who are convicted for crimes under Virginia state law. The prison is operated and maintained by the Virginia Department of Corrections.
This housing unit/program accommodates a juvenile male population between ages 16-18. It is located at the Sussex Correctional Institution and is intended to manage the State’s most difficult juvenile offenders. Some of these youth have been sentenced by Superior Court to the adult system for serious offenses.
Hampton Place is segregated from the adult male population within the Sussex Correctional Institution. Hampton Place is a therapeutic community, which seeks to change behaviors through structured programming. Programs for inmates include substance abuse treatment, anger management, alternatives to violence, youth leadership, public speaking, parenting, education, counseling, and religious services.
The mission of the Hampton Place is to promote and prepare the offender to leave prison in better shape than he or she arrived, thus lowering Virginia’s recidivism rate.
Education is mandatory for juveniles without a high school diploma, and offenders attend classes five days a week. Young offenders with a GED are encouraged to earn their high school diploma.
Other activities include religious worship, substance abuse programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, and outdoor recreation. Hampton Place offenders are permitted weekly visits, daily phone calls, and visits to the commissary. Inmates can buy snacks and school supplies from the commissary.
Inmates are given three meals a day; all meals are approved by a staff dietician. Inmates are allowed recreation time outside each day where they can exercise or play sports.
