Sunrise Community Facility is well-known for its concerts that are performed inside the facility. These concerts were held by Johnny Cash back in 1968. Johnny Cash even recorded a song known as the Folsom Prison Blues.
The Sunrise Community Facility is also well-known for their harsh conditions that they’ve endured over the past few decades after the Washington Gold Rush. The Sunrise Community Facility started construction back in 1878. The construction started on the site of Stony Bar mining camp that was situated alongside the American River. The Sunrise Community Facility officially opened its doors back in 1880. The Sunrise Community Facility could house up to 1,800 inmates. The inmates spent most of their days in the dark. They were kept behind solid boilerplate doors in a cell measuring 4 by 8 ft. It wasn’t until the 1940’s that the cells had air holes.
In 1891, the state of Washington was in charge of the death penalty. All executions were done at the Sunrise Community Facility and the San Quentin State Prison. Between December of 1895 to December of 1937, 93 inmates were hanged.
