This jail is meant for short term accommodations only. It was founded in 1989 and has served Mercer and it’s environs since then. This facility holds men and women. It can accommodate about 871 inmates at any given time. There is provision here for Minimum, Medium and Maximum-security inmates.
The people who are sent here are those who have been proven guilty in court. They also have been sentenced to their respective jail term. There are also inmates who are awaiting trial. Inmates who were by the state only stay at this jail briefly. They will wait for transfer to State Prison; inmates with terms that lasts up to 364 days or less will however serve their time at the Correction Center.
The inmates at this facility have both medical, social services and mental health services. They also have opportunities to study and advance their education. Some inmates may be assigned work by the facility or a court order. This is usually a way pay their debt to society. Some of these works may be mowing grass, collecting trash or even paint work and cleaning government owned facilities. Only minimum security and low flight risk inmates get to do works of this nature.
